Tangerine Dream ~ The Keep (1983) & Firestarter (1984)

Tangerine Dream is a German electronic music group founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese. The band has undergone many personnel changes over the years, with Froese being the only continuous member. Drummer and composer Klaus Schulze was briefly a member of an early lineup, but the most stable version of the group, during their influential mid-1970s period, was as a keyboard trio with Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann. Early in the 1980s, Johannes Schmoelling replaced Baumann, and this lineup, too, was stable and extremely productive. (Wiki)

Formed in Berlin in 1967, the initial line up (on their first release Electronic Meditation) included Froese, Conrad Schnitzler (cello) and Klaus Schulze (drums). Their compositions, or rather experimental improvisations, had roots in the psychedelia of London albeit with the Kraut twist. Electronic Meditation is perhaps a misnomer; traditional instrumentation of organ, drums, guitar, cello, flute were hardly electronic and "freak out jamming" is the more apporpriate adjective, reflecting the confluence of Twentieth Century avant-garde music. "Puer Natus Est Nobis" is a Christmas mass composed by Thomas Tallis around 1554 - this track is from the introit, "Gloria", and is credited as "Gloria" from the "Mass for Four Voices". This theme appears in the film when the demon saves Eva from the soldiers. "Heritage Survival" and "The Night In Romania" first appeared in several live concerts during the 1982 "Logos" tour, but were not titled as such until the soundtrack release. The tracks appear in the film when Dr Cuza rejects the demon. "Canzone" appears to be an original composition for the film and is used in the scene where Prof Cuza triumphantly brings the Talisman to the surface. None of the other tracks were included in the actual film score.

Composition #4 Charly The Kid is the tour de force track. Glowing synth layers bounce off each other, with three at one time coalescing to complete the single melody in an impossibly brilliant mathematical formula that sends neurons into a blissful frenzy. (Discogs)
