Kafka is a 1991 mystery thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Ostensibly a biopic, based on the life of Franz Kafka, the film blurs the lines between fact and Kafka's fiction (most notably The Castle and The Trial), creating a Kafkaesque atmosphere. It was written by Lem Dobbs, and stars Jeremy Irons in the title role, with Theresa Russell, Ian Holm, Jeroen Krabbé, Joel Grey, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Alec Guinness.

...Set in the city of Prague of 1919, Kafka tells the tale of an insurance worker who gets involved with an underground group after one of his co-workers is murdered. The underground group, responsible for bombings all over town, attempts to thwart a secret organization that controls the major events in society. He eventually penetrates the secret organization in order to confront them...

Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka (3. Juli 1883 in Prag, damals Österreich-Ungarn; † 3. Juni 1924 in Kierling – heute Stadtteil von Klosterneuburg –, Österreich; selten auch tschechisch František Kafka) war ein deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller, der aus einer bürgerlichen jüdischen Kaufmannsfamilie stammte. Sein Hauptwerk bilden neben drei Romanen bzw. Romanfragmenten (Der Process, Das Schloss und Der Verschollene) zahlreiche Erzählungen.

Kafkas Werke wurden zum größeren Teil erst nach seinem Tod und gegen seinen erklärten Willen von Max Brod, einem engen Freund und Schriftstellerkollegen, veröffentlicht. Seither zählen sie zum unbestrittenen Kanon der Weltliteratur mit vielfältigen, anhaltenden Wirkungen.

Franz Kafka (German pronunciation: [fʁants ˈkafka] Czech pronunciation: [ˈfrants kafka]; 3 July 1883 – 3 June 1924) was an influential German-language author of novels and short stories, regarded as among the greatest writers of the 20th century. The term "Kafkaesque" has entered the English language to describe situations like the ones in his writing.

Kafka was born in a middle class, German-speaking, Jewish family, in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Working for an insurance company, he wrote in German the novels The Trial (Der Process), The Castle (Das Schloss), Amerika (Amerika or Der Verschollene), and many short stories including The Judgment (Das Urteil), The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung), In the Penal Colony (In der Strafkolonie), and A Hunger Artist (Ein Hungerkünstler). His writing has been associated with Existentialism, Socialism and Marxism, the influence of Judaism has been interpreted in different ways. Writing played a dominant part in his relations to several people, including his father (Letter to His Father), his fiancée Felice Bauer (Letters to Felice), and his sister (Letters to Ottla).

Only a small part of Kafka's works was published during his lifetime. The large body of his writing, including unfinished works, was published posthumously, mostly by his friend Max Brod who ignored Kafka's wish to destroy the manuscripts.

His work influenced writers such as Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, but also inspired films, plays, music and computer games.
